Welcome to the webpage of the Department of Geology, University of Sistan and Baluchestan (USB). Here is some information about the department.
The Department of Geology was established in 1985 at the Teacher Training University of Zahedan (TTUZ), with the aim of training geology teacher mainly for the Sistan and Baluchestan province, and the neighboring provinces of eastern Iran. By 1992, when the TTUZ was merged with USB, more than 120 geology teachers have been graduated from TTUZ. Since 1992 the department continued expansion of its academic programs as it currently offers graduate-level programs in hydrogeology, economic geology, structural geology, geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and paleontology and stratigraphy, with the most notable being offering of doctoral level studies in geochemistry.
Currently, eleven faculty members and five staff are working at the department. The research in the department is focused on the geology of eastern and central Iran, hydrogeology and resource geology with reference to the geology of eastern Iran.
The Department of Geology is equipped with:
1. Several surveying equipment and field geology devices
2. Thin section preparation workshop and pertinent equipment
3. Six well-equipped mineralogy and petrology, sedimentology, economic geology, soil and rock mechanics, structural geology, and paleontology labs.
4. XRD (maintained by the Central Lab of the University, CLU)
#5. XRF (CLU)
#6. ICP-OES (CLU)
#7. SEM (CLU)
The department maintains two separate geological museums. One museum contains fossils, minerals, rocks, and ores from all around the world, and is housed by the paleontology and mineralogy-petrology labs. Another museum exhibits a variety of geological samples solely from Iran, and is located in the faculty of science.
