Dr. Mojtaba Bakherad, an assistant professor of mathematics at the department of mathematics, University of Sistan and Baluchestan, participated at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This congress is the biggest meeting of mathematicians in the world. About 5790 people participated in ICM 2018. The ICM is one of the world's premier forums for presenting and discussing new mathematical discoveries. The ICM 2018 was held in honor of Professor Maryam Mirzakhani, one of the winner of the fields medalists of ICM 2014. The four winners of Fields Medals of ICM 2018 were:
1) Coucher Birkar
2) Alessio Figalli
3) Peter Scholze
4) Akshay Venkatesh.
The Fields Medal is a prize awarded to two, three, or four mathematicians under 40 years of age at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), a meeting that takes place every four years. The Fields Medal is regarded as one of the highest honors a mathematician can receive, and has been described as the mathematician's "Nobel Prize" although there are several key differences, including frequency of award, number of awards, and age limits. The name of the award is in honor of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields. Fields was instrumental in establishing the award, designing the medal itself, and funding the monetary component.
